The Scribes Women vs Ridge Meadows Bruins clash in week 18 was a fascinating encounter, not only because second place in the division was on the line, but also because of the way this rivalry match built towards a breathtaking finish.
The Bruins scored first, and at times looked dominant in the first half, but despite scoring four tries before the break, Scribes kept themselves in the match with opportunistic scoring. The Bruins were consistently in the lead by either 5 or 10 points at various points in the second half, but were unable to pull away. As the game entered its final two minutes that gave and get an edge, the Bruins led the Scribes 34-24.
Following a phase directly in front of the uprights, a collection of tired Bruins tacklers failed to contain Whitney Paronish-Rowe, who finished off some nice passing with a try in the corner. This gave Scribes an important bonus point, but also left just enough time remaining for a restart. Moments after the restart kick, Scribes were in possession of the ball and were racing up field with only one tackler to beat. The tackle was made inside the 22m line, and the breakdown became an epic contest of will and determination. Scribes rookie Morgan Glover won the ball, and with the try line in sight elected for a risky run to the blindside, but was bundled into touch.
It was a heartbreaking conclusion to yet another a highly entertaining match between these two teams. Final score Bruins 34-29 Scribes.
The Scribes Women are now gearing up for a playoff run, with only a pair of games against Westshore remaining in the regular season. The first of those two fixtures goes this Saturday at Rupert Park, with kickoff scheduled at 11:15am.
The Scribes Men’s match against Kelowna is set to follow at 12:45pm.
