The Scribes Men began their 52nd club rugby season with an important 27-17 win over erstwhile rivals from East Vancouver.
The Britannia-Lions, who have now been playing their rugby in Delta for over a decade, returned to Commercial Drive and encountered some heavy traffic on the pitch at Trout Lake, as the Scribes back line run roughshod over the visitors. The energized attack featured a handful of new players, including fullback Jessie Hocking who scored a try on his Scribes debut.
The bonus point win vaults Scribes into a tie at the top of the Division 2 tables. They will be hard pressed to remain there for the duration alongside powerhouse teams like Abbotsford and Langley, but the opening weekend result was exactly the kind of positive start to the season that the boys were hoping for.
Up next for the Scribes Men will be a tough road trip up to Kamloops to face the Raiders on Sept 14.
The Scribes Women will also take to the field next Saturday as they begin their season against United RC in New Westminster.
