Game reports from last weekend:
U15: The team traveled to South Surrey on a windy day. The home team had the wind to their backs to start. However, the Scribes & Meralomas combination scored a couple of great tries, stemming from the quick thinking Shane to take a quick tap penalty to score under the posts.
Women: The women faced off against Abbotsford RFC on the cold rainy Saturday in what some would call a “mud bath”. Abbotsford used their speed to score some quick tries in the first half, but the women were able to rub the mud out of their eyes and put up a solid defense in the second half. Elyce the destroyer ran over several Abottsford players for a try off the back of a scrum. In the final moments of the game after a great push from the forwards and some fine ball handling by the backs, forwards player, Kelsey was able to smash through the defensive line for a try. Also, big shout out to Sonia Kung and Amber Parker for putting their bodies on the lines and making several massive tackles throughout the game. Players of the match by Abbotsford were Val (backs) and Elyce (forwards).
Men: A wet and cold day saw the Scribes take on a strong Abbotsford side. The early minutes saw the Scribes defending strongly on their own line and despite being under some early pressure the boys in blue and gold were able to hold them out, press down field and score the first points of the match via a penalty conversion from Nate.
Thanks to some crafty kicking Abbotsford were able to score 2 tries in quick succession but a fantastic charge down effort from Declan saw the Scribes finish the half in a strong position and within striking distance to start the second half.
Unfortunately the Scribes were not able to find any momentum in the second half as the pitch turned to mud and we found ourselves with 2 men in the sin bin heading into the final 15mins of the game. Abbotsford took full advantage and ran out worthy winners.
Despite the loss, the team was in good spirits at the end of the game with all the boys adopting the coaches mantra of “we win or we learn”.
Highlights of the day included Leo running onto the field like a man possessed, Declan’s quality charge down try and Jules enthusiastically cancelling evening plans when he heard he had to get to the club house for a boot.
Remembrance Day
This Thursday marks 103 years since the end of the World War I, also known as The Great War and coined by the English writer H.G. Wells as “The War To End All Wars”. Sadly, there were no lessons to be learned from the first global conflict and just over twenty years later, the planet was thrust again into battle, with the start of World War II. Sacrifices were made and millions of lives were lost. In Canada alone, 2,300,000 Canadians have served and more than 118,000 made the ultimate sacrifice
which is why, on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, we pause for one minute to honour those who have served and continue to serve during times of war, conflict and peace. One minute. Think about that; brave men and women putting their very lives on the line to protect your freedoms and all that is asked of you is to pause your busy lives to remember these heroes. Better yet, make your way down to a legion or preferably, our legion and talk to a veteran to personally thank them for what they have done. It’s important. Lest we forget…
This year the ceremony will take place inside the Grandview Legion. If you wish to attend, please arrive at the Legion by 10:30am. The bar & Scribes Lounge will be open afterwards. All Scribes members are welcome to attend. There will be a number of bands playing throughout the day. Come down and thank a veteran for their service.
