The Scribes Women stumbled on the final play of the game against Bayside on Saturday, falling by a final score of 33-26.
While there was much conjecture among supporters whether Scribes were in fact leading by two points at the time, rather than the level pegging reflected in the final tally, it ultimately did not factor into the final result. Bayside pushed relentlessly during the game’s closing 20 minutes, and finally found a well deserved breakthrough at the death.
Scribes had trailed by two tries early in the second half, before a pair of long-distance efforts, including an intercept try, were scored in rapid succession to put the home team in the ascendancy. Regrettably, Scribes failed to land the decisive blow and Bayside seized the win in the game’s closing seconds.
Overall, this match was a superb test of Scribes ability to field a full 15 player side, contrasting with the 10-aside and 12-aside matches typical of BC Rugby Tier 2. It also tested their resolve and fitness in the longer format. The final score notwithstanding, Scribes showed that they have the depth of talent, tenacity in defense and desire at the breakdown to be a very competitive Division 1 team when the Spring 2020 Competition begins.
The Scribes Women will feel good about the results from the last couple of months, with plenty to look forward to in the new year when the rugby season begins anew.
Women’s Final Score:
Bayside 33-26 Scribes
Scribes tries scored by Cat, Elyce and Bethany
The Scribes Men were granted a 20-0 victory in the standings, owing to the fact that Bayside did not have enough players available for Saturday’s match.
Scribes attempted to make the most of the circumstances with a non-competitive run-out. Given Scribes very positive form in recent weeks, it was clear that the lads would have preferred to play the regular match as scheduled, but alas the Division 2 schedule will now go on break for several weeks. As a result, the Scribes will need to come into the new year aiming to carry over the momentum they built during the fall campaign.
Scribes have a friendly match arranged with Meraloma next weekend to unofficially round off the 2019 season before heading into the holiday break.
