Scribes Men draw with SFU, 14-14.
November 28, 2018
Scribes were hoping to head into the holiday break with a win, but were forced to settle for a three game undefeated streak instead, following a 14-14 draw with SFU.
The match started well for Scribes, who controlled early possession through the forwards and opened the scoring thanks to a try from Alec Morrison. SFU pushed back, seeking a try of their own, but the Scribes defensive line held the visitors off the board through 40 minutes.
SFU would eventually find the breakthrough early in the second frame, leveling the score at 7-7.
Scribes regained their lead with about 20 minutes to play, utilizing a 5m scrum to get the ball into the hands of Jason Murphy, who crashed over the line.
With less than two minutes to play, and Scribes leading 14-7, SFU remarkably found space to run in the centres and crossed the whitewash in the corner. No less remarkably, the long distance conversion had just enough hang time to clear the bar, bringing the score to 14-14.
Determined to not let this game slip away, Scribes fought valiantly to regain the possession on the restart, made a steal in the tackle, moved the ball into the middle of the field and won a penalty, all in a nearly perfect sequence. With a 30m kick beckoning, David Delachoux sailed the ball directly at the left upright. As the ball hovered above the post, one touch judge flag went up, while the other flag stayed down. The referee’s decision was “wide” and that was it. Final score 14-14.
Scribes will head into the break with a record of 3W-4L-1T. Next up on the calendar is the 12 Pubs of Christmas on December 15th.
